Printing

Before you can print from any application on your rCloud desktop you must first set up a printer on your desktop. Note that has to be done once each session as the drivers are not saved in your profile.

  1. Log in to your rCloud desktop
     
  2. Right-click on the Printers folder on the desktop to open
     
  3. Double-click on your program's printer folder
     
  4. A list of available printers will display

     
  5. Right-click on the printer of choice and choose Connect to download the printer driver to your rCloud desktop (note that this has to be done once per session in order to print). Close the folder when you are done.

    You may install multiple printers.
     

  6. When you are ready to print a document from any application just choose Print and select the printer from your list

     
  7. You will see a confirmation message in the bottom right corner of the window verifying the print status

Note that you will still need to go to the lab and log in to the print release station to finalize printing of your document.

Saving Your Work

It is not recommended that you save your files to your rCloud profile. Files saved within your rCloud profile will be deleted at the end of each academic year and are not backed up. There are several preferable options for saving your work:

Permanent Cloud storage accessible anytime, anywhere
Permanent Local Storage
  • Portable storage: external hard drive, USB drive
  • Personal computer hard drive
 Temporary Storage
  • Personal U:  User drive
  • SECCM  Shared S:  Drive 

Please note that the U and S drive contents are deleted at the end of each academic year so any work not saved in a different location will be lost.

Keep in mind that the U and S network drives are not backed up and are only intended to serve as a temporary storage solution while you are working.

To save your  Microsoft Office work using OneDrive cloud storage:

  1. Click on Save As
  2. Click on OneDrive and log in (Note that you have to set up your OneDrive account -formerly called SkyDrive - initially). This will then become your default document storage during your session.

To save files created in non-MS Office programs to your local hard drive:

  1. Click on Computer to display your options
  2. Scroll down to Local Disk (C: on YOURNAME) about halfway down the list, This is your local hard drive on your personal computer. Note that you will also see any other drives attached your local computer listed below your Local Disk (C: on YOURNAME) which you can also select if preferred.

     
  3. Choose the Read/Write option to allow the virtual desktop to access your local computer. 
  4. Click on Users
  5. Click on your name and browse to My Documents, your Desktop, or wherever you wish to store the file

To save a file to Bridges Resources cloud storage:

  1. Download your file to your local computer
  2. Log in to Bridges
  3. Click on Resources
  4. Click on Add
  5. Select Upload File
  6. Browse to the file on your local computer
  7. Upload the file

To save a file to your Google Drive cloud storage:

  1. Download your file to your local computer
  2. Log in to your Google account (gmail.rwu.edu for students; gmail.com for faculty)
  3. Click on the Apps icon
  4. Click on Drive
  5. Click on the Upload arrow
  6. Browse to the file on your local computer
  7. Upload the file

To save to your network User ( U) drive:

  1. Click on the Network Drive (U: on Yourname)
  2. Click on Save

To save to your network Shared ( S) drive:

  1. Click on the Network Drive (S:  on Yourname)
  2. Click on Save

Best Practice Tips

Get Wired

SECCM students will see best rCloud performance if they plug into a data jack versus using wireless. Students will need an Ethernet cable to plug their computers into a data jack. Note that students who have newer Macbooks that don't include an Ethernet port may purchase a Thunderbolt to Gigabit Ethernet adapter for around $30.

One other note: If you are plugging into a data jack also make sure that you shut off wireless on your device. Having both wireless and wired connections going simultaneously can cause a conflict that  could impact performance.

Log off versus disconnect

It is a better practice to log off at the end of your session versus selecting the disconnect option. Pressing Disconnect will close this window but will leave your virtual desktop running, allowing you to re-connect and return to what you were doing when you left. Pressing Log Off will end your session on the server.
